Bronte Wins Contemporary Singer of the Year Award »
Bronte Florian, after being runner up two years in a row, won the Final of the Sydney Eisteddfod's 'Contemporary Singer of the Year' Segment which was conducted recently at Petersham RSL. The Club has been supporting the Eisteddfod since 1992. Bronte took out the award from a final line-up of eight contestants, all of whom provided outstanding performances. MC for the night, Petersham's Marketing Manager Warren Burr, says the Club CEO and Board Members were so impressed by the talent that several of the Finalists have been invited to perform professionally at the Club in the near future. 18-year-old Brontehas been studying music, dance and drama for 12 years and has performed with such prestigious companies such as Opera Australia, The Australian Theatre for Young People and Oxfam International. She's in Year 12 at the McDonald Performing Arts College on a full Scholarship and is hopeful of fulfilling her dream of becoming a successful Australian entertainer. And based on her performance at the Sydeny Eisteddfod we believe there's little doubt.
Kokada Youth Leadership Challenge »
The following comes from a Media Release from Clubs NSW (1 April 2011): ClubsNSW is offering two people between the ages of 16 and 22 the chance to walk the Kokoda Track as part of the 2011 Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge. ClubsNSW CEO Anthony Ball said it will be a difficult task to choose the two lucky young people based on last years’ experience. More than 1,000 people applied in 2010 with more expected this year. We are not just looking for a young person who is up to the physical and mental challenges Kokoda is renowned for. We will be looking for someone with great leadership qualities who has already made great contributions to their local community. The chosen two will fly with other successful young people from across Australia to Papua New Guinea where they will walk an extended version of the Kokoda Track, which at 155kms, is 61kms further than the usual arduous route. ‘’Everything from flights, accommodation, meals, and hiking boots will be provided-the only thing participants need to do is training to get a very high level of fitness.’’ Prudence Mewburn, 20, who was selected and completed the Challenge last year, said it gave her a bigger appreciation for her great uncle and late father who both served in the war. ‘’They both enlisted at 16- I can’t get over the level of maturity they must have had,’’ she said. ‘’As much as I struggled, the soldiers faced greater adversity, some younger than me- the opportunity renewed my enthusiasm to help my community.’’ At the completion of the ten day trek, the group will visit the Bomana War Cemetery. The cemetery contains 3,819 Commonwealth burials from WWII, 702 of them still unidentified. For more information or to obtain an application form, please visit www.clubsnsw.com.au/kokoda or email kokoda@clubsnsw.com.au. Applications close Sunday 8 May, 11.59pm.
Jets Set To Soar »
The Jets bowed out of last year’s NSW Cup finals series prematurely and Newtown’s coach Greg Matterson is determined to make this year a season to remember for Jets fans. New players who are sure to prove to be crowd favourites with Henson Park regulars include halfback Mark Kheirallah, who has joined the Jets from the Sydney Roosters under 20’s. Mark has the speed and creativity to develop into a very fine player and he will be a big asset to the Newtown club. Another newcomer sure to be popular with Jets fans is flying centre Francis Vaiotu, formerly with Cabramatta and the Parramatta Eels under 20’s. Tough front-rower Khalid Deeb is this year’s team captain and he has stepped up to the plate to accept his new responsibilities. The Newtown Jets and the Petersham RSL Club have been partners for over ten years and this continues this season with all Petersham RSL members gaining free entry to all Newtown Jets Home games. Just show your membership card to gain entry. Be sure to keep up with all the Jets news and their 2011 NSW Cup draw by going to: www.newtownjets.com.au (http://www.newtownjets.com.au)
Petersham RSL Backs a Champion »
On Saturday 12th of March the Petersham RSL supported Randwick-Petersham Cricket Club celebrated two major achievements, celebrating their 10 year anniversary and winning the club championship. The club championship is what all Sydney grade clubs aim for as it shows the ultimate strength and depth of club through all the grades. Point’s earnt by each team in a club are multiplied by weighting factors (more for 1st grade, etc.) the points are the added across the whole club with the winner being the club with the most points. It was a close finish for the title with the final round deciding the winner. Randwick-Petersham were trailing competition heavy weights St George by 9 points heading into the final round. St George lost in both 2nd grade and 3rd grade to drop from first to third, North Sydney moving up to second and Randwick-Petersham taking top spot by winning 4 from 5 grades in the last round all with a bonus point. That very night the club also celebrated 10 seasons on the field together since they merged and the club championship meant that there was even more to celebrate. Congratulations to all grades on a great season and good luck to 1st and 2nd grade who are involved in finals.
